Bertine Bahige was a 13 year old boy living in Bukavu, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he was studying industriously to become a doctor. He had is future planned, until something bad happened.
I will take you across the river for free.
A rebel group called the Mai Mai invaded Bertine's town, going to each home to abduct children for more soldiers to recruit. This was the major push factor for Bertine, to get away from this group.
Quem é Você?
I wonder what that means...
He spent two years in captivity. The child rebels would rise through the ranks by being violent and treating each other ruthlessly. He could no longer stand it, so he escaped.
You're being resettled, resettled to the United States!
After escaping the rebel's outpost, Bertine came across a fisherman where he offered to take him across Lake Tanganyika for free. From there, he hid in the back of a fish delivery truck for three days. Eventually he left the truck and continued his journey, ending up passing out near a tree from hunger and exhaustion.
When he passed out by the tree, he woke up and found himself surrounded by several other people speaking a language which he could not decipher, which was probably Portuguese. It turned out he was in Mozambique, and would soon find himself in a Maputo refugee camp owned by the United Nations.
Bertine spent 5 years in the refugee camp. He was eventually resettled to the United States by the United Nation's Refugee Agency.
