The American colonists refused to surrender a small cannon. Francisco de Castenda and soldiers were sent to retrieve it. Their path was blocked by high water. The Texans then marched over the river and raised a flag. They then attacked the Mexican troop. The battle was only a small skirmish.

Settlers would be exectued if they were captured by Santa Anna, so they fled their towns in fear. Their goal was to cross the Sabine river and reach the U.S. . The towns of Gonzales and San Felipe de Austin were burned down. Many died in a few months.
Deaf Smith,a Texas spy, and two or three men were sent to go detroy Vince's bridge. This trapped Texans and Mexicans in the swampland. They waited until afternoon to attack. This 18 minute battle was won by the Texans. Santa Anna disappeared and the Texans searched for him.They finally caught Santa Anna,this led to the Treaty Of Velasco.
