The Rohingya are a mostly Muslim, ethnic minority in Myanmar, a mostly Buddhist nation. They have been the victims of persecution and genocide, both dealt out by the Rakhine (the ethnic majority in Myanmar) and govt. They refuse to recognize them as a people or give them citizenship.
Almost 700,000 people have fled Myanmar to escape from the destruction of their homes and villages. Many Rohingya villages have been burnt down. Although the govt. claims to not be hurting any civilians, so many have died, even though they are not a threat to their govt.
The Myanmar military has also killed at least 730 children under 5 years old in about one month. They have also raped and abused Rohingya woman and girls. The military defends itself by saying that the Rohingya have been burning there own villages and doing these things to themselves.
Because of the abuse from the govt. and military, the number of refugees leaving Myanmar continues to grow.
The 700,000 that have fled have fled to a neighboring country, Bangladesh. They are still taking refugees, although they are coming in fast and consistent. Many people are still in danger by staying in Myanmar. The gov. and military are still avidly killing and mistreating the Rohingya.
Not much is being done to help the Rohingya or all of the refugees in Bangladesh. The refugee camps are filling up fast, and Rohingya villages are still being burned, and innocent people being killed. Almost nothing has gotten better since the crisis started.
