  • Dred Scott. A slave in Missouri. His master, Peter Blow, died, and Scott was sold to Dr. John Emerson
  • 1832
  • Owner (John Emerson) brings him to Illinois and to Wisconsin territory and Scott met and married Harriet Robinson
  • I'm suing for my freedom. Emerson is dead, and I'm in free land.
  • I refuse. You are our slave.
  • 1847
  • Slaves could petition for their freedom in free states such as Illinois. His extended time in free states (IL and Wisconsin territory). This should qualify his freedom...
  • Your Honor, he's not even a citizen!
  • ...but the Supreme court was biased to slavery.
  • Blacks do not have the right to sue because they are not citizens. Federal law does not dictate the prohibition of slavery in territories.
  • Abraham Lincoln was elected because people in the north were enraged by the ruling. Furthered sectionalism which led to the secession of the South.
