Storyboard Text

  • Olaudah Equiano was born in 1775 in Nigeria. When he was 11 years old, he and his sister were kidnapped, after being split up from his sister, he was shipped to and Barbados and then to Virginia where his name was changed to Gustavus Vassa, by Michael Pascal.
  • Equiano travelled the ocean with Pascal for 8 years, and over that time, he was educated and taught to read and write.
  • Pascal then sold Equiano to a ship captain in London, before he was sold again to merchant Robert King. Even though he worked for king as a deckhand and a valet, he managed to gain money buy trading on the side.
  • In three years Equiano had earned £40, which was enough to buy his freedom but Equiano did not feel safe staying where he was as people tried to recapture him to serve as a slave for other people.
  • By 1786, Equiano got invloved with the abolishment of slavery . Three years later, Equiano published an autobiography, 'The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African.' Copies were selling massively and this made Equiano a very rich man and it helped in the abolition of slavery.
  • In 1792 Equiano married an Englishwoman, Susanna Cullen, they had two daughters: Joanna Vassa and Anna Maria Vassa. Sadly he died in
