The cycle starts with nitrogen in the atmosphere, atmospheric nitrogen.
During nitrogen fixation, N2 is converted to ammonia by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
During nitrification, ammonia is converted to nitrite by bacteria and then to nitrate so that the energy can be obtained.
Plants absorb the nitrogen through their roots from the soil in assimilation.
After plants or animals die, decomposers convert the nitrogen back into ammonia through ammonification.
This is a loss of nitrogen as a result of when nitrate is converted into gaseous forms of nitrogen.
