Storyboard Text

  • After Birth
  • Ages 3 to 6
  • I now know that I don't have to cry!
  • The Pruning Process
  • Today in class there was a fire drill, so we all went outside
  • We have branching neural networks in our brain that enable us to walk, talk, and remember that are growing at a wild pace
  • Infantile Amnesia
  • Hey sweety, do you remember in preschool when that fire alarm went off?
  • I remember that! We were outside when the alarm went off!
  • This age has the most rapid growth in our frontal lobe which enables rational planning. You can now control your attention and behavior!
  • Maturation
  • The normally occurring process that changes and reduces the number of neurons, synapses and axons that exist within the brain and nervous system.
  • Mobile Memory
  • When you were a baby, I tied a string to your leg and the other end to your mobile, so that when you kicked the mobile would move
  • Our infantile memories rarely predate our third birthday.
  • 7 years later...
  • As a child, I crawled before I stood, and I stood before I walked-- all in the proper order. This is the normal process we biologically go through.
  • Wow! I don't remember ever doing that. And I always remebered that if I kicked, the mobile would move?
  • Even though you can't remember what happened before the age of three, you can still learn new things and remember things unconsciously while you are that age.
  • Yep!
