In the Early 1900's of America, immigrants saw hope in dark, urban areas.
With Immigrants traveling to america, cities did not know how to house all of the people. So came the solution of tenement buildings, which brought hope for people seeking housing. little did they know that it brought danger of fires, sanitation and even more overcrowding.
The 30 million immigrants that traveled to the America, the ones that left to find a new era, found only to realize it was a dream. Even though they had survived the travel from their home land, they did not escape poverty or live in safe houses.
Firefighters made urban areas safer by assisting the putting out of fires.
Due to the enhancement of automotive, fire trucks could respond to emergencies faster. Pluming was a big step for urban areas because they had no sewage systems. They were expensive to install, therefore ineffective until It became affordable for all.
Had the progressives from the 1900's not have tried to improve the cities then, the world would be very different then it is now. It would be dirtier and unsanitary.
