The Walker's house was a pitiful home that everyone avoided, the couple argued all the time.
Tom took a shortcut through the swampy forest and met the Devil. He noticed that the Devil was chopping down trees with the names of some of the townspeople.
Tom Walker's wife snuck out of the house with all their valuables in an attempt to make the deal Tom denied with the Devil.
Tom Walker's wife went looking for the Devil and was never heard from again. When Tom went looking for her in the swamp hoping to reclaim his stolen valuables he discovered her heart and liver wrapped in her apron hanging from a tree.
With his wife gone Tom accepted the deal from the Devil. He agreed to become a usurer and set up a shop in town. But later in his life he regretted making the deal and became very religious hoping to atone for his deal.
The Devil came to claim his soul when he least expected it. He was dragged through the town and swamp then into the underworld, fulfilling his end of the deal and taking his life in the process.
