In this scene the crazy man keeps saying "Am I mad". The reason he keeps saying this is because this is something to think about when reading the story. When reading the story you will know the answer to his question. He also repeats this because he will tell you a story where you will find out the answer.
"And then when my head was well in the room I undid the lantern cautiously--oh, so cautiously--cautiously" (Poe 3). In this scene the crazy man goes into the old man's room to watch him sleep. The crazy man is peeking his head through the door with a lantern. He does this because before he kills him he wanted to see his vulture eye open.
"In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him" (Poe 11). In this scene the crazy man kills the old man. He killed him by suffocating him with the bed. He left the bed on the old man until he couldn't hear his heartbeat anymore.
"I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings" (Poe 13). In this scene the crazy man is hiding the old man's body. He hid it under the floor. But the thing is he hid so well that you wouldn't tell something is under there.
"they heard!--they suspected!--they knew!" (Poe 17). In this scene the crazy man is going crazy because he keeps hearing the old man's heart beat. The police are here because they heard a shriek so they came to check it out. He thinks the police officers can hear the noise too which makes him say all those things. He tries to talk louder but the noise keeps increasing which makes him think he is gonna get caught.
"I admit the deed!-tear up the planks!-here, here!- it is the beating of his hideous heart!" (Poe 18) In this scene the crazy man couldn't take the noise anymore. Since he couldn't take it anymore he admitted he killed the old man. He also told them where it was.
