The Articles of Confederation had created a very loose alliance of the 13 independent states. There was some limited things. Power, and dispute over western lands, were all limited.
The constitution was a document that sets out the laws, principals, organization, and process of a government. States had written constitutions because they wanted to spell out all of the rights of the citizens. It would also limit the power of the government.
The first American Constitution was approved in 1777. It had helped people realize what rights they had as citizens. It had also later helped them in the future.
Bill of Rights
By 1783, the United States had won its independence. The constitution of confederation had conflicts between states, money problems. They also had other nations that had taken advantage of them.
Daniel Shays, a Massachusetts farmer who had fought at Bunker Hill and Saratoga, had organized an uprising in 1786. More than 1000 farmers had taken part in 'Shay's rebellion.' They had attacked courthouses and prevented the state from seizing farms.
Virginia's constitution had included the bill of rights. It was a list of freedoms that the government had promised to protect.The bill of rights had included, trial by jury, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. Later after, other states had followed Virginia and did the same thing.
