In the village of Loun-Arrik located in southern Sudan the soldiers from Sudan come in and start attacking the villagers.
"As salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at uncle. Three shots rang out. The men ran away" (Park, pg 63). On Salvas trek he is reunited with his uncle but then a group rebels shoot uncle leaving salva without anyone.
Salva and the the other people that are living in the refugee camp are pushed out by soldiers and are forced to swim through the Gilo river which has crocodiles and many people get killed either from being shot or being attacked from crocodiles.
