  • Carthage had become a great seafaring nation and led the area in trading Then, in 219 B.C., Hannibal and his troops attacked Saguntum, an ally of Rome.
  • Yes, sir
  • Although they had know of each other for over 15 years, this was the first time they had met face to face
  • Today is the battle?
  • They agreed to meet and talk before the planned battle at Zama near Carthage. The fall of Saguntum marked the beginning of the Second Punic War.
  • Tell the class they will try to prevent the Third Punic War. Divide the class into two teams, and have each team represent their team’s general-- Carthage (Hannibal) and Rome (Scipio)
  • You save me from the bad ones
  • Allow time for teams to research and develop points each man would have present during their talk before the battle at Zama. Assign a team leader to make sure each member of the group participates in research and discussion.

  • Choose a timekeeper who will limit each speaker to two minutes to give his or her point or rebuttal. Set up tables across from each other to hold the debate.
