- When is Alfredo getting married? Esperanza might be tired waiting!
- Long-engaged couple are like that.
- An immense sadness as of loss invaded his spirit, a vast homesickness for some immutable refuge of the heart far away from where faded gardens bloom again, and where live on in unchanging freshness, the dear, dead loves of vanished youth.
- Alfredo is a dignified young lawyer in this town, over thirty, a bachelor, and is engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Esperanza.
- Outside Alfredo can hear his father, Don Julian, and his sister Carmen talk about him. Carmen asked and give a reason for Alfredo's wedding. Don Julian seems to understand what might have happened to the engaged couple, but he didn't say exactly what.
- Alfredo remembers it with shame, he was very much engaged to Esperanza at that time
- Julia was not obviously pretty but she had a charm that enthralled Alfredo as time passed by, little by little he was falling in love.
