"Women can't have as much rights as men."
Sojourner Truth: "Ain't I A Woman?"
Equal Rights for Women (1848-1998) By Emily Failmezger
Sojourner Truth: "If the first women god ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down alone."
"Christ wasn't a women!"
The Women's Rights movement accomplished: New York gave women control over their property and wages, and Indiana passed more liberal divorce laws. They also accomplished get women the right to vote. It helped women be as equal as men. Women can now get an education not like before when women were not accepted into college and universities.
"Your not smart enough"
Sojourner Truth: "Then us women together ought to be able to turn it back."
There was a need for this reform because men thought women were not smart. They thought of women as only being good at taking care of children. Women tried to get there point across but they were not allowed to speak in front of a crowd.
The leaders of the reform are Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, and Sojourner Truth. Before these women helped women had to pay property taxes although they had no representation in levying of these taxes. Women were robbed of their self-confidence and self respect, and were made totally dependent on men.
Before this movement married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law. Women couldn't vote, women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation. Married women had no property rights. Divorce and child custody laws favored men.
The women started groups to help women get the rights they deserve. They went to meetings with these groups but there were men there. the women were not allowed to talk at the meetings because the men didn't think they could make decisions for themselves.
