  • Step 1:
  • How to Calculate Percent Composition by Mass
  • The first step is to multiply the molar mass of each element times the number of atoms. Then add the product of each of the atoms.
  • CO2Carbon- 1 atomOxygen- 2 atoms1 x 12.01= 12.012 x 16.00= 32.0012.01 + 32.00 = 44.01
  • Step 2:
  • 12.01/ 44.01= 0.27232.00/ 44.01= 0.727
  • The second thing you need to do is to divide the molar mass of each element and divide it by the compound molar mass.
  • Step 3:
  • 0.272 x 100= 27.2% -- 27%0.727 x 100= 72.7% -- 73%27% + 73% = 100%
  • The final step is to multiply the decimal number by 100% and round. The sum of those numbers should be 100.
