How to Calculate Percent Composition by Mass
The first step is to multiply the molar mass of each element times the number of atoms. Then add the product of each of the atoms.
CO2Carbon- 1 atomOxygen- 2 atoms1 x 12.01= 12.012 x 16.00= 32.0012.01 + 32.00 = 44.01
12.01/ 44.01= 0.27232.00/ 44.01= 0.727
The second thing you need to do is to divide the molar mass of each element and divide it by the compound molar mass.
0.272 x 100= 27.2% -- 27%0.727 x 100= 72.7% -- 73%27% + 73% = 100%
The final step is to multiply the decimal number by 100% and round. The sum of those numbers should be 100.
