Mom can you help me with math?
Sorry hun I'm running late for my other job. Next time okay?
Hey have you ever thought of what you want to be when you grow up?
Honestly? I don't know.
Education is the key to move up a class but when in poverty poor education and bad neighborhoods make it difficult to change ones lifestyle. There is an injustice happening because most people in the lower class want to put in the effort and time into getting a good education and possibly moving up a class but it is difficult for them because we the people do not put enough time and money into helping them. Students are not able to get a good education to change their life because if in poverty, families can only afford to live in poor neighborhoods that do not have good schools. Commuting to better schools can be another problem because public transit is difficult for them to get.
Students in poverty find it difficult to even get help at home because some parents don't have college degrees or could be illiterate and others have multiple jobs and therefore just don't have the time to help. Consequently, these students tend to have fewer resources both economically and socially.
Parents that don't have college degrees don't have the ability to know what classes are important for college so they trust their kids to make the right choices. Other parents are too busy working and trying to financially help their family survive instead of guiding their kids so these students have less goals, ambitions, and motivation to do good in school or focus on college.
Doing things like funding for schools in poor neighborhoods, helping students in poverty have better access to public transit to go to better schools, or even investing in better after school programs and providing resources that can strengthen students mentally and academically can make a huge difference. By making one of these changes, it can not only change someone's life, but can also improve our economy.
