Storyboard Text

  • Jefferson, I just cannot have the United States going to war with France. There would be too many lives lost in war. I will find another way to settle this. We will not go to war and that is final.
  • Excuse me Mr. President, but this is madness! We have to attack the French now or else they will still look down on us, take our ships, and harass us as a country! We must attack now! There is no other option!
  • SILENCE!! We shall not battle the French. I have come up with a plan that may bend them to our will. Just bare with me. I will discuss this more with the council members, and give details later. Good day.
  • So this is your plan. Sending people to France to negotiate with them. What if your plan fails? What are we going to do then?
  • Would you rather risk the lives of many people, or send three men to try to negotiate with them. I personally prefer the latter.
  • President John Adams is talking with Vice President Thomas Jefferson about the issue with France and is deciding what actions to take without upsetting the people.
  • We refuse to pay a single coin to you! We would rather fight a war!
  • In the town, Adams tells his decision to the people with Jefferson by his side. Though neither Jefferson or the people seem pleased with the announcement.
  • So, the French think we are smaller than them. They won't take us seriously. Hn. We must try again. We have to show them the U.S refuses to be treated with disrespect.
  • President John Adams is now speaking with the council about his plan in hope they will agree.
  • We will stop the attacks if you pay us a $12 million loan for France.
  • Charles Pickney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry were sent to France to negotiate. They met with France's representatives, known as X, Y, and Z, who wanted to bribe the Americans.
  • Charles Pickney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry returned to the States and told President Adams what happened. Adams was not pleased by the results.
  • We will try to talk to them again. Hopefully they will listen this time.
  • After much effort and many arguments, the French finally began to respect the United States. U.S ships were left alone and people were able to trade with whoever they wanted.
