I have more votes? I'm not surprised, I'm a war-hero!
I'M NOT GOING TO WIN!!!
I'm losing...hmm...what to do...
John Quincy Adams is THE BEST!!!
Andrew Jackson was favored by the people. He got the most electoral college votes with 99 votes and the most popular vote with 153,544 votes.
OMG!!! I WON!!! I'M THE PRESIDENT!!!
John Quincy Adams came in second with 84 electoral college votes and 108,740 popular votes. Henry Clay came in last with 37 electoral college votes and 47,531 popular votes. Clay had no chance of winning.
....and now I'm Secretary of State.
Even though Andrew Jackson had the most votes, he didn't have sufficient electoral votes to become president. The House of Representatives now had to choose who would be the next president. Clay was the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
JACKSON SHOULD'VE WON!
Instead of Andrew Jackson, who had the most votes, winning the presidency, John Quincy Adams won and became president.
After John Quincy Adams became president, Henry Clay became Secretary of State.
Andrew Jackson's supporters were outraged. They believed that this was the result of corruption in the government. This is now called the Corrupt Bargain of 1824.
