About two years after giving birth to her third child Kassidy, Jim moved the entire family to Egypt for the sake of his work. Su was practically a single mom due to how much time Jim spent working, and moving to Egypt only worsened this issue. Still dealing with her lightning episodes and trying to get back on her feet, Su felt helpless at times and sad that her marriage was not working.
"I had hoped that when we moved to Egypt, we would be able to live our lives together as a family of five . . . unfortunately, Jim was just as much of a workaholic as he had always been" (172).
Eventually Su and her family move back to the U.S and Su even begins to take college classes. However, going back to school was extremely challenging for her and putting a strain on her marriage as Jim continued to be a workaholic and did not help her at all. As their marriage hit rock bottom they took a questionnaire as a start for marriage counseling. The last question was "Have you ever had an affair?" and Jim confesses that he has.
"Then he showed me his answer and my world as I knew it ended. He had written 'yes' " (225).
After Jim's big confession, Su was furious. However, they both wanted to give things one last try. Meanwhile, Su reconnects with her ex Neal Moore over Facebook. She starts to wonder how different her life would have been when she learns that she had left Neal for Jim back in college.
"Though I love my family more than anything, part of me will always wish I had been there with Neal" (266).
"When I began this book project, all I really wanted to do was to explain what it really means to live with a head injury to as many people as would listen" (275).
Despite all the hardships Su has faced since her accident, she continues to live her life as best as she can. Though, her relationship with Jim isn't perfect, they make things work and keep a close knit family. Most importantly, Su's main goal is to spread awareness about the impacts of head injuries.
