Celie is a fourteen year old African American girl who has been constantly raped and abused by her father. Celie writes letters to God speaking about the horrible things that have happened to her in her young life.
Due to Celie constantly being raped by her father, she gave birth to two babies. Later on, Celie's father marry's her off to Mr.____ in replace of her younger sister Nettie. Celie soon realizes that Mr.____ is just as vile as her father, but does nothing to stop the advances at first, but soon enough she begins to fight back.
Mr.____ brings Shug Avery, who is very ill, home for Celie to nurse back to health. Shug, is the opposite of Celie but they quickly fall in love with each other. She finally has a chance to experience true romance.
With the help of Shug, Celie discovers why she hasn't heard from her sister Nettie in so long, Mr.____ has been locking her letters in his trunk. Nettie's letters open up a whole new world for Celie and give her strength to leave Mr.____.
Nettie's letters start to change the way Celie see's things. She learns many things about Pa, about her many children, and about her sister Nettie. She soon learns who Nettia has been living with and who has her children, as well has finding out that her Pa is dead and that his house now belongs to her and Nettie.
In Nettie's letters, Celie learns that Nettie has been living with Reverend Samuel and his family, including Olivia and Adam, Celie's two children that Pa took from Celie, and were adopted by Reverend Samuel. After decades of being in Africa, Nettie finally returns to Celie and they are finally together once again.
