  • Thomas Gallaudet was home recovering form being so very ill. He had been going to school to work at a church.
  • He say a girl that didn't play with the other kids. That girl was Alice Cogswell. who was deaf.
  • they can learn like normal people.
  • He taught her how to spell and she would write words in the dirt. She spelled hat and was so happy. After that he made it his life's work to educate the deaf.

  • I went to England to see if they'd help, but for obvious reasons the didn't want anything to do with me.
  • So I asked my friends in France to help and they were happy to teach me.
  • There he met Laurent Clerc who agreed to teach Gallaudet french sign. Clerc was deaf.

  • In sign: May I go to america with you to teach
  • When it came Gallaudet to go back to America he had thought he hadn't learned hardly enough to teach it. Clerc offerd to go with him for 3 years.
