  • Luis Riel appeared as a spokesperson for the Red River Colony, with back up from most of the colony's residents.
  • In November, Riel lead a group of militants who defended McDougall and a group of land surveyors from entering the colony.
  • The rebels elected a provisional government with Luis Riel as their leader. The rebels started negotiations with the Canadian government to join confederation. This was not allowed.
  • In winter, Luis assassinated Thomas Scott. A land surveyor who tried to attack rebel militants.
  • The assassination of Thomas Scott angered protestants in Ontario. Then, in May 12th , 1870 ,the Manitoba Act was signed, which created the province of manitoba.
  • Luis Riel was sent to Manitoba until he came back to fight the northwest rebellion against the Canadian government and the metis militants. After the rebellion he was hung for treason.
