The civil war was a war between the Northern states of the US and the Southern states of the US. The North wanted to abolish slavery for good, while the South wanted slavery to continue. The war lasted from April 12, 1861, to April 9, 1865. On that day Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse.
No more slavery!!!!
In 1865 and 1866, President Andrew Jackson was very lenient on allowing the Southern states free reign to rebuild their governments. Because of this, black codes were made and Congress took over and started the radical reconstruction.
Presidential Reconstruction will allow the Southern states to rebuild their government.
The radical reconstruction was controlled by the Congress, and their purpose was to make sure that all of the Southern states stop slavery, making them adopt the 14th amendment.
When the 13th and 14th amendments were passed, black people in America rejoiced because they were now free to live real lives of their own.
Under the Radical Reconstruction, blacks were allowed to have a voice in the government for the first time in American history. However, it was not over for the suffering of black people. The 15th amendment gave everyone the right to vote.
Vote Here! All are welcome.
The group Ku Klux Klan (KKK) formed among white southerners as a way to show their hate for the black people who were freed from their ownership. The KKK helped to bring back white supremacy in the South, trying to keep blacks from thinking that they were equal. The KKK brought an end to the reconstruction.
