The ups and downs of Jamestown Aivree Amburgey Period:3
In Virginia their cash crop was tobacco. They grew tobacco on plantations where there were slaves would pick the tobacco, and they would sell it to England. This made Jamestown a lot of money to help them with their economy.
In Jamestown they lived in a swamp. meaning there were a lot of mosquitoes. These mosquitoes carried diseases, and transported them to the colonists. Also John Rolfe and Pocahontas got married as a way to create peace with the indians.
In 1619 the House of Burgesses was created in a plan to govern the new colony. People of the colony could now vote for a representative to help make laws for the colony. This was because they couldn't rely on Kind James 1 to make immediate decisions.
But sir there is no one here to make immediate decisions for the colony!
this is true, maybe we should form some type of government
The Jamestown are made up of colonists from England and 20 slaves. Jamestown was made up on a swamp, where they had good an fertile soil. This is where they grew tobacco, but Jamestown still had droughts that made things a little more difficult.
I think everyone was surprised that Jamestown was a success, especially since the first attempt failed. Not only that but Jamestown was struggling at the beginning with trade and supplies and definitely their economy. The colony was catching disease, fighting with indians, and Then when John Smith came along and gave them encouragement to get off their butts and work for something, and John Rolfe started planting tobacco the whole colony changed. Plantations were made and slaves were transported and they could finally live on their own.
