With plans to get revenge on Montresor, he treats Fortunato with false hospitality and concern for his illness as they go to the vaults under Montresor's home. Montresor offers Fortunato wine to intoxicate him.
As they continue to search deeper in the catacombs, Fortunato's illness worsens, but Montresor continues to drink and converse with him. They finally reach the part of the vaults where the remains of humans lay. Fortunato, who had become intoxicated from the wine, tries to see through the darkness.
Montresor leads Fortunato to an area in the catacombs where he is shackled to the walls. He begins to seal the area with bricks as Fortunato is shocked.
