Storyboard Text

  • Frederick Douglass jumped around from plantation to plantation, like an orphan jumping from house to house, meeting very nice people and very mean, but none of them were nearly as terrible as Covey. Frederick was a kid born in the 1800’s that was raised on a plantation in Maryland. He was a slave kid that was tortured, was separated from his mom at a young age, and he always pushed so hard to someday become free. He rarely saw his mom, and when he did it was at night when his mom could sneak out. He had to see his mom whenever he could, and it didn't matter what it was like outside, whether it was raining or snowing. Covey was a slave owner that was overall just an evil man. Covey's job was to break people’s spirits, and he did a really good job at it. Frederick was his hardest challenge, because Frederick never lost hope for good.
  • One day Douglass passed out from heat exhaustion. The mill stopped, and Covey came out to see what was going on. Covey asked a fellow slave, and he said that Douglass passed out. Then Covey threw a block of wood at Douglass. That night Frederick Douglass ran into the woods and spent the night there.
  • During his time in the woods, Frederick met a man named Sandy. After hearing about Frederick’s situation, Sandy told him that he used to be a slave as well and Sandy gives Frederick a “magic” root to protect him from being whipped. Frederick didn’t believe that the root actually had magic powers in the beginning, but he didn't want to hurt Sandy's feelings. After Frederick returned to the farm, he didn’t get whipped for a while. During the first encounter with Covey since Douglass had returned, Covey seemed awfully nice. Douglass thought the root might actually have powers. So that evening the root was put to the test…
