  • The story takes place in the old man's house in the mid 1800s'. The narrator is insane. He's supposed to be a caretaker for the old man.
  • Rising Action
  • The first conflict is internal. It is the narrator vs himself. He is insane and he thinks he is sane and tries to prove it to us.
  • Climax
  • The second conflict is external. It is the narrator vs the old man. The narrator doesn't like the old man's eyes, so to get rid of it he decides to kill the old man.
  • Resolution
  • Every night the narrator puts his head into the old man's room. He is careful so the old man can't hear him. He does this for 8 nights because the first 7 nights the eye is closed so he doesn't have the courage to kill the old man.
  • The narrator thinks he hears the dead old man's beating heart. He thinks the cops hear it too and are mocking him. He confesses that he murdered the old man.
  • The narrator is arrested by the cops.
