  • Exposition/Basic situation
  • Rising Action
  • Climax
  • ,Flowers for Algernon by Daniel keys, is emotional story that takes you through the life of Charlie Gordon, a 37 year old man with a IQ of 68(672-675). The reader gets to tag along as Charlie get this all “mysterious operation”. Which he say,”The operashun dint hurt” (677). The after effects of the operation may not be physical pain, but something on a whole new level. As Charlie goes through the changes he make new and unexpected friends along the way. But the change stems from the need to be “smarter”. But with the help of Miss Kinnian and a few doctors he can strive for that goal.
  • Falling Action
  • 1. Charlie get the chance for the operation from Miss Kinnian that says he should volunteer for the experiment. The first step in him being able to get what he always wanted. To be smart just like his friends Joe and Frank. Quote/Paraphrase: “If you volunteer for this experament you mite get smart”(675). 2. After the operation Charlie starts to change, becoming smarter. But with knowledge comes awareness, and for poor Charlie the awareness so happen to be about his friends. Maybe “friends” is not the right word more like bully, yeah that sounds right. At one of the parties they were humiliating him. This made him realize that they only view him as a joke not a friend. This broke the trust he had in the intention others had. Quote/Paraphrase: “It’s a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me”(686). 3. After some time Charlie mind keep growing with the new knowledge the operation granted to him. Although with the success the experiment was showing one of the doctors was too eager to spread the results. While the other suggested to wait and see a little bit longer. Quote/Paraphrase: “Dr. Strauss wanted to wait a while longer to be sure. Dr. Strauss said that Dr. Namur was more interested in the Chair of Psychology at Princeton then he was in the experiment”(694).
  • Resolution/Denouement
  • The climax would have to be when they realized the operation had side effects. The realization dawned on them when Algernon starts to change, refusing to do the tasks, biting Charlie (703). The doctors start to put the pieces together when, “the other animal who were used in this experiment are showing strange behavior”(703). The same was going to happen to Charlie, but they just don’t know when. Leaving Charlie in a state of madness to figure how to stop the deratisation.
  • Themes
  • 1. One of the falling actions is when Charlie know that he is going to lose the intelligence. With this he spends days working on finding a cure but gets no luck. Quote/Paraphrase: “Dr. Nemur says I’m trying to cram a lifetime of research and thought into a few weeks”(703). 2. Then Algernon dies leaving Charlie in a state of depression. He doesn’t let anyone see him anymore. While time moves on his intelligence fades leaving him irritable. Quote/Paraphrase: “I have become touchy and irritable. I feel the darkness closing in”(706). 3. After a while amnuay started to become a constant. One day he forgot that he wasn’t in Miss Kinnian class anymore. So when he went in there he realized that he is not in that class anymore, when the amnuay went away. Quote/Paraphrase: ”I did a dumb thing today I forgot I wasnt in Miss Kinnias class”(710).
  • Go away!
  • The resolution for Charlie is when he moves away to start brand new, in a place that no one will know that he was once intelligent(711). Even if the operation was not permanent it gave him the chance to experience what it was like to be smart. Moving away was his way of leting himself and the others around him move on with their life. The decision to move allowed him to be happy again. Quotes/Paraphrases (1-3): “ Im grateful that I saw it all for a littel bit”(711).
  • This is my bag, do you like it ? (hope you do it was a lot of work to make)
  • One theme that the author wants the reader to understand is that you should live in the moment because you never know what the future may hold. Quotes/Paraphrases (1-3): Before the operation Charlie was a happy person but after he started to become distant from people because of how his “friends” were bullying him(686). “Artificially increased intelligence deteriorates at a rate of time directly proportional to the increase”(705).  Even with the operation decreasing he should enjoy what he was able to help. Maybe spend time with the people that he cares about before it’s gone. But instead he just mopes around in pity instead.
