Doctor T. J. Eckleburg's eyes in this story represent how somebody is always watching, like an angel or God. This represents this theme by being a bill board in The Valley of Ashes where Nick goes and sees the billboard multiple times. The eyes always seem to be watching over.
"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning——."( Fitzgerald 193) This quote shows how the green light represents a future in which we believe in but are not able to reach.
"we walked back a hundred yards along the road under Doctor Eckleburg’s persistent stare. " (Fitzgerald 27). This quote shows that the eyes watch over them just like god does.
The green light at the end of Daisy's dock in this book represents futures in which we believe in but we simply don't accomplish because it is not meant to be. The Green lights represent this theme by intentionally putting the green light very far away showing the unreachable futures.
