  • In the first election after Texas won its independence, Texans voted overwhelmingly in favor of annexation to the Untied States.
  • Texas would keep its public lands and its public debt.
  • And in the future if it so desired, Texas would deliver all military, postal, and customs facilities to the U.S. government
  • The proposition, when formally made, was opposed by the people of the North, because the annexation would increase the area and political strength of the slave power.
  • A state constitution, drawn up by the convention, was ratified by popular vote in October 1845 and accepted by the United States Congress on December 29, 1845, the date of Texas's legal entry into the Union.
  • Texas was annexed into the United States in 1846.
