Kings and Queens
I am a king/queen. I rule over medieval Europe and give land to lords/nobles for their services and loyalty.
lords and nobles
I am a lord/noble. I am very well educated and hold lots of riches and wealth. I am very important so i have others do my work for me and fight my battle so i don't have to.
In medieval Europe, the church had the highest power. The church owned the biggest share of land and were the people who were the most educated, so this gave them a big advantage. The church was also very wealthy.
I am a knight. I am a warrior that fights for lords and nobles. In return for my services, i am given land and money.
In medieval Europe, Kings and queens were the rulers. They gave land to lords and nobles, as they could not manage it all themselves. In return for land, lords and nobles would pledge loyalty to the kings and queens and give their services and soldiers to them. When Kings died, The throne would go to their firstborn son.
I am a serf. I work on the land of nobles and lords. In return for all my hard work, I am given a small house and protection from attackers
Lords and nobles were the higher class members of society. They had and education and were the only ones allowed to wear red and green. This was because coloured dyes were expensive and they wore them as a symbol of their wealth. Lords and nobles had more important things to do than farm and fight, so they had serfs tend to their crops and knights to fight battles for them.
how feudalism started and was maintained
Feudalism in Europe started when it was introduced by king William of Normandy. It was maintained because the people at the top of the ladder had mere wealth and power than the serfs so thy could stop them if they tried to revolt. Another reason it stayed for so long was that the serfs were owned by the nobles/lords that owned the land so they had to do what they were told.
Knights were soldiers in the middle ages. They fought for the lords and nobles. In return, they would receive money and land. Knights followed the code of chivalry. This code was to protect the church, weak, poor and women. The round table that was used in the legend of King Arthur was sometimes used in medieval Europe. The idea behind it was that everyone was equal.
Serfs were the poor members of society. They worked on the land of the Lords and Nobles. They were owned as a part of the property that they worked on. Serfs lived in houses with only one room. In return for their service, they were given protection from attackers by the lords they worked for. Serfs were not able to climb up the feudal hierarchy.
