  • The Louisiana Purchase: A National Treasure
  •
  • From: David Xu To: Mr. Ellis
  • Apr. 11, 1803-April 30, 1803
  • The Port City of New Orleans
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Wow! This land is so fertile and there are bound to be many natural resources that we can utilize in forming the new country if we owned it. It would also expand our borders, therefore providing more protection from the West.
  • The port of New Orleans is such a valuable commercial asset. I wish we had possession of this land instead of the Spaniards. I shall send two explorers to scout this land and two emissaries to France to negotiate the purchase of it.
  • Sacagawea
  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Captain Meriwether Lewis
  • Jefferson wants us to gain more knowledge about this land, create new trading routes, and improve relations with the Native Americans. He convinced Congress to fund this trip because he is certain we will control this land in the future. This is Sacagawea, she is going to be our interpreter and guide.
  • Lieutenant William Clark
  • Why are we going on this scientific expedition again? What are we supposed to do, this isn't even our land? Also who is that Native American?
  • Paris, France April 11, 1803
  • François Barbé-Marbois
  • Those pesky Spaniards sure are jerks for revoking your right of deposit. Did you know I secretly forced them to give the Louisiana territory back to me in 1801?
  • Robert R. Livingston
  • Those Spaniards will sure regret ever messing with you guys. So...you wanna give me New Orleans and part of Florida?...For $10 million?...
  • I can't let him find out Toussaint l'Ouverture, a slave, lead an uprising against me and beat my troops. That would be so embarrassing!
  • Hôtel Tubeuf in Paris, 1803
  • Between you and me, I don't really want this land. I need as many soldiers and money as possible to fight the British, something you colonists know a thing or two about.
  • Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord
  • Yeah, of course! As long as you agree to our terms, we won't bring our offer to the British. Its a win, win. I get to achieve my agrarian vision and you get to absolutely decimate Britain!maybe
  • James Monroe
  • Hôtel Tubeuf in Paris, April 30, 1803
  • You just got finessed! I'm going to win my war and then reconquer the Americas!
  • I have a counter-offer for you; one that you might like very much. How about I give you New Orleans and ALL of the Louisiana territory? For only $15 million dollars.
  • So...you're agreeing to give me 828,000 square miles of land, essentially doubling our country's size and giving us access to endless resources? What a glorious morning for America!
  • You just got finessed! That is less than three cents per acre. With this land, the U.S. can finally become a major superpower in the world!
