This is Abraham Lincoln's inauguration, on 03/04/ 1861. Lincoln is the sixteenth president of the Untied States of America.
Lincoln was the first Republican President. From a Southerners point of view, Lincolns victory was determined by the free states, as the final blow in decades of sectional conflict.
In the time of Lincoln election and his inauguration, seven states seceded from the lower south.
In Lincoln inauguration speech, he tried to placate the South by stating that he won't interfere with slavery where it exists although secession of states from the union is illegal.
"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies."
Lincoln warned that he will respond to violence with force.
