  • In 1789, France was broke from the American Revolution, but the Monarchy spent a lot of money in wars. The nobles/clergy didn't have any taxes to get France out of debt.
  • Stage 4(July 14, 1789) Storming of Bastille
  • King Louis called the meeting to raise taxes because France was broke from the American Revolution. The 3rd estate refuses and walks out and then they established the National Assembly.

  • After the third estate broke from Estate General, they promised to write a new constitution, and form a new government that enforced "liberty, equality, and fraternity.
  • Stage 3(August 1789) Delaration of the Rights of Man

  • The fighting began in Bastille and ninety-eight people were killed. The third estate was very mad at King Louis.
  • A new government called the National Assembly replaced took over from the Estate General. National Assembly wrote a new constitution that stated liberty, equality, and fraternity for all men.
