Pierre has to leave behind his family behind but is making money for them to survive. His family is proud but sad and he is just saying his goodbye's to them, meanwhile he is waiting for the canoes to get loaded with the bags.
Pierre misses his family but isn't homesick. He is working great with his brigades. but at that cost his hands hurt from blisters and his muscles are sore but he is fine. He donated to a church before he left also.
They decide to run the rapids. As a consequence the ride is crazy, it is so out of control they almost flipped the boat. They are all scared for their life. It is getting harder and harder to control the boat.
When they went through Superior, the weather was terrible. It was so bad that they had to head to the island. It was so scary, there was big waves and it was raining. It also started getting darker and colder.
Pierre and his canoe partners are very excited when they see they have made it to Grand Portage. They see that Mukwa the chief is waiting for their arrival. Pierre is curious because he has never been there.
Pierre decided to go home. He plans to tell his family all about the voyage, he thought it was great. That is why he is going next spring, he learned a lot and got a lot stronger and wiser.
