The presidential election starts at the beginning of the election year, where the primaries decide who the next presidential candidates will be. Each party meets up and decides who should be the next candidate.

During primary elections, citizens vote on delegates that support a candidate from each party. The candidate from each party that gets the majority of the votes ultimately runs for president.
The delegates vote for a candidate at a national convention
After the candidates have been elected, they travel around the country and support their campaigns in order to convince voters to vote for them.
During election time, voters don't directly vote for their president. Instead, they vote for the electoral college. The party that gets the majority vote for the state takes all the points that the state is worth.
