“I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out.”
"'Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.'
"'First of all,' he said, 'If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-''Sir?''-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.'"
Jem and Scout are brother and sister living in the city of Maycomb. Jem and Scout meet up with Dill who comes every summer and they discuss the mysterious "Boo Radley"
"Tin-foil was sticking out of a knot-hole just above my eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun. I stood on my tiptoe, hastily looked around once more, reached into the hole, and withdrew two pieces of chewing gum minus their outer wrappers."
Summer is over. Dill leaves Maycomb. Scout is excited to begin school for the 1st time.As she gets to school she realizes that her teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, deals with children in very bad manners.Miss Caroline Fisher makes Scout feel bad for being educated.
“It was then, I suppose, that Jem and I began to part company. Sometimes I did not understand him, but my periods of bewilderment were short-lived. This was beyond me.”
Scout gets in a fight with Walter for getting her in trouble, but Jem interferes and invites Walter over for lunch. Atticus and Scout have a very deep and emotional talk.
"Then I saw the shadow. It was the shadow of a man with a hat on. At first I thought it was a tree, but there was no wind blowing, and tree trunks never walked. The back porch was bathed in moonlight, And the shadow, crisp and toast, moved across the porch towards Jem."
Summer has come again. Scout finds gum in a tree knothole and later, he finds 2 "Indian Head coins". Since Dill is back, they are playing in the yard all together and Jem and Dill accidentally roll Scout in a tire to the Radley's residence.
Jem and Dill grew closer which made Scout feel left out. Scout begins hanging out with neighbor Miss Maudie. Jem & Dill plan to give a note to Boo inviting him out to get ice cream but Atticus catches them and orders them to “stop tormenting that man”
Jem and Dill obey Atticus until it is Dill's last day in Maycomb. The boys accompanied by Scout sneak to the Radley Place and see stuff they havent seen before. They come home to a crowd.
