  • Weeknesses of the Confederation
  • New York owns Vermont
  • New Hampshire owns Vermont.
  • After the Revolution, America had to come up with a form of government. This forced states to write constitutions to set out laws, set the rights of citizens and limit the power of government within their boarders.
  • Admitting New States
  • I declare this territory as the state of Michigan.
  • The Articles created a loose alliance of the 13 independent states. This gave Congress very limited powers. The Articles had no President to execute the laws. Because of this the states had to enforce the laws passed by Congress.
  • A Call for Change
  • Don't seize our farms
  • The Articles of Confederation were not going as planned. Many states disputed over land. The United States also owed money to foreign nations. To make matters worse each state had their own currency, which caused confusion. Finally, other nations were taking advantage of the US.
  • In 1787, Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance which set up a government to the Northwest Territory. The Northwest Ordinance made a way to admit states to be part of America. The states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin were created from the Northwest Territory because they had 60,000 free settlers and were able to ask Congress for admittance.
  • America faced a depression because of economic problems. This hit farmers very hard because the demand for farm goods went down after the Revolution. Some states raised taxes, and when the famers could't pay them,  the courts would seize their farms. Farmers attacked courthouses in Shays' Rebellion to try and prevent the state from seizing their farms.
