The Salinas River runs close to the hillside, a few miles south of Soledad.
Lennie and George stop by a near-by river to rest up a bit, and drink some water. Lennie drank a lot of the dirty looking water, and George tries to help Lennie avoid drinking too much to where he gets sick.
As Lennie and George were walking to go to a ranch, George noticed something odd in Lennie's hand. He knew Lennie didn't have his work card, so he demanded that Lennie showed him what was in his hand; a dead mouse.
George loses his patience with Lenny, and starts rambling on about how much better things would be if Lennie wasn't around to just bother him. Lennie heard the things George said about him and tears started filling his eyes.
Once George's anger passed, he quickly realized how much he hurt Lennie. He remained quiet and started to talk about the dreams he and Lennie have, to raise his spirits. At first, Lennie was still hurt over what was said, but later got excited for their plans for the future.
After a long day, Lennie and George decide to get some rest to prepare for the big day tomorrow; getting a job.
