I hope Jim won't be mad that I cut my hair. Besides, I did it for him.
I miss my hair.
In the exposition, we are introduced to Della and Jim, a young couple with very little money. After saving up her money for months, Della finally has enough money to buy her husband a Christmas present. It is Christmas Eve, and time is running out.
Welcome home Jim!
She has looked everywhere for a gift. In the conflict of the story, Della doesn't have enough money to pay for the watch chain so she decides to cut off her hair in exchange for the watch. This is a hard decision for her but she does it because she feels that Jim deserves it.
I love it!
The suspense begins to build. Della is worried that Jim might not like her anymore because of her haircut. For now, she has to wait until he gets home to show him his gift.
When Jim comes home, Della thinks that Jim's shocked because she cut her hair but later realizes that it's because of what is inside of the present.
The resolution turns out that Jim sold his watch to get Della a comb, and Della sold her hair to get him a watch chain. Although it doesn't work out perfectly in the end, it still shows that they care about each other.
Wait til you see your gift!
Thanks so much for the watch chain. However, I sold my watch for the gift.
The theme of the story is that love is the most important thing in life. They were both willing to give up their most prized possessions to buy a gift for each other. That shows that love is worth more than objects.
