Storyboard Text

  • Douglass is a young slave that is sent to live as a field hand with mr.covey (an infamous slave breaker) away from his real place of work in baltimore.Douglass was learning to read so he was sent to Mr.Covey's plantation to become a field hand for 1 year.Douglass had no experience as a field hand at the time, so he was very nervous to see what it would be like to have a new job, and new master. At first arriving Douglass sees many fields with people working in them and several small and large buildings.Douglass advances to meet Mr.Covey.
  • At first arriving Douglass gets straight to work in the fields.Douglass is shocked at Mr.Covey being so extremely cruel to Douglass and the other slaves. At the end of the day Douglass is exhausted from working and being mistreated.Douglass would continue to work in Mr.Covey's plantation being beaten and worked to near death for months.Douglass was tough and still continued to try and keep up with reading and unlike the other slaves, Douglass did not break so easily, so Covey developed a hate for him.All the labor must have caught up to him because one day he got very sick and collapsed working in the fields.
  • When Douglass collapses on the field Covey is there soon after. “Get up!” says Covey, Douglass tries and fails of getting up and Covey gives douglass a brutal kick of his side. “Get up!” Covey says again.Douglass manages to get up but falls once again. That's when Covey gets his hickory stick and gives Douglass a blow on the head, then walks away, leaving Douglass to his fate.Douglass runs away into the woods, away from Covey and the plantation.
  • Douglass stays in the woods for a short while. He wishes he could be an animal and be free of slavery.Douglass thinks to himself, “If I go back, I will be beaten, but if i stay here I will starve.”.While in the woods Douglass meets another slave in the woods named Sandy, Sandy is another slave of the way to a nearby town near the woods.Sandy gives Douglass a so called magic root that will protect you from getting beaten by your master.Douglass accepts but does not know if it will work when he returns.
  • Douglass heads back to the plantation of sunday with Sandys magic root. When Douglass arrives he heads to the barn and covey is there soon after.Covey starts to tie him down when douglass has the spirit to fight back and hits covey.Covey and douglass both fight for 2 hours, douglass drew blood from covey but douglass never bled.Douglass had succeeded in fighting off Covey.
  • Douglass was now standing over Covey, Covey had the look of fear and confusion.Douglass was confused that the magic root had appered to work! After Douglass’s fight with Covey, Douglass would never be beaten, whipped or attacked after that day from any one of his new masters including Covey. There would be more fights but he was never beaten or whipped.Covey had failed in breaking Douglass, Douglass would be a slave for several years after this event but with the magic of the root, he was never mistreated by his masters again.
