Storyboard Text

  • Sharon and Elaine are in a loving marriage and want to adopt a baby. They both work very hard, but still make just enough money to scrape by.
  • We want to adopt a baby!
  • Neil and Patrick are also in a loving marriage and want to adopt a baby. They both come from affluent families and have white color jobs.
  • We want to adopt a baby!
  • Adoption is an expensive process, and adoption agencies are more likely to give babies to more affluent couples. There are likely more systems of oppression at play, as Sharon and Elaine are also black and lesbians. These identities could also effect their income. This makes adoption more challenging.
  • Why did they get a baby and we didn't?
  • We're going to be great fathers!
  • Non-heterosexual people can adopt!
  • Laws that allow gay couples to adopt children (which are not applied in every state) largely exclude lower income people, who are more likely to be women and people of color. This is an example of trickle down social justice--as these laws often only help gay couples who are affluent and white. To make adoption inclusive, adoption policies must be broadened so that income, social class, race, ethnicity, and sexuality are all non-factors in deciding which people can adopt.
  • Any person or couple who wants to adopt a child will be considered equally!
  • Even social movements meant to highlight inequality and abuse such as the #Me too movement left out many women who are the most vulnerable to sexual abuse--both globally and within the United States
  • #METOO
  • STOP SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMEN
  • Undocumented workers, people currently experiencing abuse, and women without access to the internet faced barriers to participate in this movement, and a hashtag on Facebook didn't stop their abuse from occurring.
  • I'm an undocumented domestic worker. I have been sexually abused, but I'm afraid if I seek help or go to the police I will be deported and taken from my family.
