Dr.Strauss says that Charlie should write everything he thinks and remembers. He tells him that they are going to use him for an experiment to make him smarter. He then went to a doctor named Burt to do some Rorschach tests. Charlie couldn't see in them. Then he does other tests. One of them was a race between him and Algernon(a mouse). Charlie didn't understand these tests but he did them anyways.
The operation was going to start and many people went to to wish Charlie luck. Miss Kinnian went to to wish him luck too. He was hungry but couldn't eat before the operation. Charlie was surprised because Dr. Strauss did the operation while he was sleeping.
Charlie keeps writing the reports and keeps doing tests. He thinks each morning that he wakes up that he is going to wake up smart but it takes time. At the bakery where he works. The guys who work with him there make fun of him all the time but he doesn't know it yet.
Charlie is starting to have dreams and is also starting to remember things. This means that he is already getting a bit smarter each day. He is starting to see that his "friends" are not really nice to him. Meanwhile, he is getting better at some tests and he finally wins against Algernon.
Miss Kinnian is teaching Charlie how to write better using punctuation and spelling better. She says that he is learning fast. Charlie was seeing that she was a nice lady like his mother. That made him remember how his mother was.
Charlie was already starting to remember things and was having dreams. One of those days he had a nightmare where he was 11 years old and it was valentines day. He was going to give this girl he liked a necklace and a valentines letter. He gave it to her but he next day she didn't say anything to him. Then he sees that her 2 big brothers are coming for him and then they beat him. He said he was pretty dumb because he believed what people told him.
