Hey doctor, I was just informed by the nurse that I am going to be prescribed a statin. I've never heard of them before, can you please tell me what are they used for?
Those are drugs that are used to treat high cholesterol.
Okay. I was wondering if you could tell me what some of the statin drugs are and what drug are you prescribing me?
Two statin drugs are Simvastatin and Atorvastatin. I am going to prescribe you Atorvastatin, which is known as Lipitor.
Can you please tell me more about this drug? How does it work and how can it help me?
Atorvastatin works by lowering your blood cholesterol level by decreasing the production of cholesterol. This drug will also help you lower your risk of heart attack, stroke and heart and blood vessel problems.
I am not sure what will happen when I start taking this medication. Could you please educate me so I know what I need to be aware of while on this medicine.
You can expect when taking Atorvastatin that the production of cholesterol in the body will slow down to decrease the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries and block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Always monitor your triglyceride levels because you want the your cholesterol levels down.
Okay, what are some signs and symptoms I need to be aware of while taking this medication?
Some side effects of this drug are abdominal pain, rash, headache and rhabdomyolosis which is the breakdown of your muscles. If you experience muscle weakness or pain in your muscles please contact me right away.
Okay, thank you so much for taking the time to explain this drug to me. Hopefully it works and I will keep you posted as to how I am doing with the medicine.
