I chose sacrifice for this scene or "cell" because I kept thinking how bizarre it was that Tessie's own kid and her husband threw rocks at her regardless of their relationship. This shows sacrifice by Tessie giving up her life for the future of her town, even if it is against her will.
"Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones." "-eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square..." Foreshadows Tessie getting harassed at the end of the story.
Shirley Jackson creates the mood of horror at this point of the story by making Tessie scream and shout,"It isn't fair, it isn't right." Because she was being surrounded by people and harassed relentlessly.
