Plymouth By Emily Sanderson 3rd period History
Onward to religious freedom!
Puritans and Separatists, also known as Pilgrims, came to the new world searching for religious freedom under the leadership of William Bradford.
A storm caused the travelers to land in Cape Cod, Massachusetts instead of Virginia. There, soil was rocky and dry, and therefore it was difficult to grow cash crops.
The Pilgrims established the Mayflower Contract, a plan of government where the people consulted each other to make laws.
Settlers turned to the environment and did more than just plant crops. They made money off fishing, running small farms, harvesting timber and whaling.
What is the difference between Jamestown and Plymouth? To begin with, only men were sent to colonize Jamestown, and the majority were gentlemen who didn't work. As for Plymouth, both men and women were sent. Second, Jamestown was located at a swampy, fertile and marshy area while Plymouth was at a rocky, cold and dry location.
