  • Patricians
  •  My job is to rule Rome and make important decisions for its people.  If the time comes, I will fight for Rome. I also pay taxes.  Aside from that some of the jobs I can have is being a magistrate or hold a seat in the Senate.  Since I'm wealthy, I own slaves to work for me.
  • I'm one of the rich, landowning men that rules Rome in the days of the republic.
  • Plebeians
  • I am a free man who can own land and slaves. I could work as a trader or a farmer. I fight for Rome and pay taxes just as patricians do.  I only have some of the rights patricians do. I don't know about laws and how the republic works. I don't get the big important jobs the patricians do and I can't outvote them.
  • I'm a commoner in the city of Rome.
  • Women
  • I watch the house and cook.  I am not allowed to enter places where the patricians make the laws. I can't vote on anything so that means I don't get any say in what happens around the city.
  • As a woman in the city of Rome, I Don't get to do much.
  • Slaves
  • We have no say at all in any matter. Our lives are usually short and brutal. Some slave jobs were to build roads and other buildings and to repair the aqueducts. Other slaves worked as clerks and tax collectors for the city.
  • Being a slave in Rome doesn't really have many perks. I'm a worker who has to obey my master or I will be punished.
  • Consuls
  • The citizens (the patricians before the plebeian revolt) of Rome voted for two consuls. One of these was for the army and the other for the city. They were elected to serve for one year so that individuals could not gain too much power. It was the Consuls job to govern Rome. They had to both agree on all decisions. That way the decision was fair. After they had served their year they were replaced. They were not allowed to be consuls again for ten years. The consuls were a crucial part of Rome and the same idea goes into the government of America today.
  • I say we move the army to the north.
  • Magistrates
  • The citizens of Rome voted for lots of different magistrates. It was the magistrate's job to keep law and order amongst the people and also to manage Rome’s finances. It is a big job to manage the money of an entire city. Magistrates also worked as judges to settle court cases. When magistrates retired they became senators and attended the Senate. As earlier stated, these jobs were filled by patricians since they held power.
  • And then finance an new aquaduct
  • Today I have to settle a court case between the plebeians and the patricians
