  • Weathering will occur! Weathering and erosion will cause the phosphorus ions from the rocks to be distributed into the soil down below where its assimilated by plant cells. This part of the biogeochemical cycle is called the phosphorus cycle.
  • How do animals get phosphorus ions?
  • The phosphorus from the abiotic rocks are absorbed into the soil/ water stream and then the plants are ingested by the cows who are biotic
  • Do the phosphates ever leave the animals?
  • Good question! The phosphates are returned into the soil once the animal excretes either feces or urine. This is a type of biomass. Phosphates can also be absorbed back into the soil once plants decompose
  • How do phosphates get into bodies of water?
  • Phosphates can enter bodies of water in many different ways. Similar to fertilizer run off from factories can enter bodies of water, also a cause of ozone depletion. As phosphorus travels through different reservoirs chemical reactions occur
  • Once phosphates enter bodies of water how can they return back to the cycle?
  • The phosphates in sedimentary rocks settle to the bottom of the ocean floor. To move them back to land into the cycle they must be uplifted in a cycle called geologic uplift. The phosphates are returned to where the plants and animals are in the biosphere

Phosphate fertilizers can really harm organisms and the surrounding environment.Although a limiting factor is that there is very little phosphate in the soil it is still important to be aware of. Farmers have to mine for phosphate in order to obtain enough for their fertilizers. Fertilizers found in lakes create an excess of algae
