  • keep the United States neutral in foreign affairs as much as possible, as he did not believe it wise for the new nation to involve itself in the affairs of other nations.
  • Piracy
  • the agreement in 1794 between England and the U.S. by which limited trade relations were established, England agreed to give up its forts in the northwestern frontier, and a joint commission was set up to settle border disputes. Origin of Jay's Treaty. named after John Jay.
  • Impressment
  • The XYZ Affair was a diplomatic incident between French and United States diplomats that resulted in a limited, undeclared war known as the Quasi-War. U.S. and French negotiators restored peace with the Convention of 1800, also known as the Treaty of Mortefontaine.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • The cause of the U.S. participation was pirates from the Barbary States seizingAmerican merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom, demanding the U.S.pay tribute to the Barbary rulers. United States President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay this tribute. Sweden had been at war with the Tripolitans since 1800.
  • British impressment of American sailors was one of the major causes of the War of 1812. It helped to cause the war because it emphasized the fact that the British didnot respect American sovereignty. The British navy had traditionally impressed men off of British ships and out of British port towns.
  • Battle of New Orleans, (Jan. 8, 1815), U.S. victory against Great Britain, the final major battle of the Warof 1812. In the autumn of 1814 a British fleet of more than 50 ships commanded by General Edward Pakenham sailed into the Gulf of Mexico and prepared to attack New Orleans and block the Mississippi River.
